Founded in 1974, the Hellenic Mediterranean University is a non-profit public higher education institution located in the suburban setting of the small city of Heraklion (population range of 50,000-249,999 inhabitants), Crete. This institution also has branch campuses in Agios Nikolaos, Chania, Rethymno and Sitia. Officially recognized by the Ministry of Education, Religious Affairs and Sports of Greece, Hellenic Mediterranean University (HMU) is a large-sized (uniRank enrollment range: 20,000-24,999 students) coeducational Greek higher education institution. Hellenic Mediterranean University (HMU) offers courses and programs leading to officially recognized higher education degrees such as bachelor's degrees and master's degrees in several areas of study. Hellenic Mediterranean University's Housing University Housing

  • Only students who have passed the exams of the Ministry of Education & Religions of Greece and have enrolled at the Hellenic Mediterranean University are eligible to apply for free accommodation in student dormitories.
  • First-year students submit their application in September during registration, and the selection of students is based on economic and social criteria.
  • HMU provides Residence Halls which can host 296 students in Heraklion and 37 students at the Departments located in Chania, Rethymno, Agios Nikolaos and Sitia.
  • The student dormitory in Heraklion is located on the south of the central campus of the University, at a distance of approximately 400 meters, with a total area of approximately 24 acres and a capacity of 296 beds.
  • Buildings B and D have specially designed rooms that can accommodate the disabled, and the dormitories are mixed gender.
  • The student dormitory in Sitia is located 6 km away from the University, with a total capacity of 22 beds in double rooms.
  • Double rooms cost 30€ per month, while single rooms cost 45€ per month. Students from large families are exempt from charges if they choose a double room.
  • At the towns of Agios Nikolaos, Rethymno and Chania, the University rents rooms according to the current needs, and students not receiving a room at the student dormitories are entitled to a rent allowance.

  • The Hellenic Mediterranean University indoor sports center is named Markos Karanastasis
  • The "Markos Karanastasis" indoor sports center is located at the Hellenic Mediterranean University central campus, approximately, 5 km south-west of Heraklion city. The building complex has an area of 7280 sq.m.
  • There is a wooden parquet court of 1128 sq.m. (40m x 28m) which can host basketball, volleyball and handball games. The court can support either two training fields of 26,00m x 15,00m or one training field of 28m x 15m. The free height of the playing field is 17.00m. Both the equipment and the wooden parquet comply with Fiba specifications.
  • The indoor sports center has fully equipped service areas for athletes 2 large changing rooms with sanitary facilities and showers, 3 coaches/referees' changing rooms with sanitary facilities and showers, and two fully equipped wheelchair accessible WC/showers. HMU gym facilities are fully wheelchair accessible.
  • The capacity of the stadium is 1898 permanent seats, 16 official guest seats, two journalist booths with 3 journalist seats each.
  • The facilities consist of a doctor's room, a physical therapy/massage room, two sauna rooms and a fully equipped gym of 500 sq.m. There is also a 250-seat amphitheater with a 11m x 6m stage and a 300 sq.m reception area for holding conferences and cultural events. Outside the sports center, there is an outdoor area of 2000 sq.m. available for cultural events.
