The Southern African Regional Universities Association (SARUA) is a membership-based organization that comprises universities and higher education institutions in the southern African region. It was established in 2005 to enhance the capacity of higher education institutions in the region and promote collaboration among member institutions.
SARUA's main objectives are to:
a) Foster collaboration among member institutions in research, teaching and community engagement;
b) Advocate for the importance of higher education in the development of the region;
c) Promote the mobility of students, academics and researchers among member institutions;
d) Encourage the development of high-quality academic programs and curricula;
e) Promote the sharing of best practices and resources among member institutions;
f) Facilitate networking opportunities among member institutions.
SARUA's membership includes universities and higher education institutions from 15 countries in southern Africa, including South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique and Malawi, among others. The association is governed by a Board of Directors, which is responsible for setting its strategic direction and overseeing its activities.
