Oak Ridge Associated Universities

Oak Ridge Associated Universities

Overview

Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) is a consortium of universities and research institutions in the United States. It was established in 1946 as the Oak Ridge Institute of Nuclear Studies (ORINS) to provide a platform for collaboration among universities and the government's Oak Ridge National Laboratory. In 1966, it was renamed as ORAU to reflect its expanded mission beyond nuclear science.

Today, ORAU provides a variety of services in scientific and technical areas, including workforce development, scientific and technical education, environmental assessment, health communication and peer review. It also manages a number of programs, such as the Oak Ridge Science Semester, which provides undergraduate students with hands-on research experience at Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

ORAU's membership includes over 100 universities and national laboratories in the United States, as well as international members from countries such as Japan, Germany and the United Kingdom.
