Established in 1898 and officially recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) and the U.S. Department of Education (USDOE), the Accreditation Council on Optometric Education (ACOE) is a national accrediting body of the American Optometric Association (AOA).
ACOE accredits professional optometric degree (doctor of optometry O.D.) programs, optometric residency programs (post-doctoral) and optometric technician programs (certificate or associate degree level) in the United States and Canada. The council's mission is to promote excellence in optometric education by accrediting programs that meet or exceed established standards. ACOE is responsible for ensuring that educational programs meet the standards and requirements established by the AOA.
ACOE-accredited programs have demonstrated that they meet or exceed established standards for optometric education and that graduates of these programs are competent to practice optometry. ACOE accreditation is required for graduates of optometric programs to be eligible to sit for the national board examinations and obtain licensure to practice optometry in the United States.
