American Library Association, Office for Accreditation

American Library Association, Office for Accreditation

Overview

The American Library Association (ALA) is the oldest and largest library association in the world. One of its many divisions is the Office for Accreditation (OA), which is officially recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) and responsible for the accreditation of library and information studies programs in the United States and Canada.

Established in 1923, the Office for Accreditation works with academic programs to ensure that they meet the standards for library and information studies education set by the American Library Association. These standards cover a wide range of topics, including curriculum, faculty qualifications and resources available to students.

Accreditation by the ALA-OA is important for library and information studies programs because it indicates that the program has been rigorously reviewed and meets high standards of quality. Accreditation can also be important for students who want to pursue careers in library and information studies because it can help them identify high-quality programs and may be a requirement for certain types of jobs.
