Established in 1801, the Inspectie van het Onderwijs (Education Inspectorate) is an independent supervisor responsible for monitoring the quality of education in the Netherlands. The Inspectorate focuses on all education sectors, from primary education to higher education and on all aspects of education, such as the quality of the educational process, the learning outcomes of pupils and students and the quality of the governance and management of educational institutions.
The Inspectorate regularly inspects educational institutions and issues reports on the quality of education and the findings of the Inspectorate. These reports are public and can be consulted by parents, pupils, students and other interested parties.
In addition to supervising the quality of education, the Inspectorate also has an advisory role. For example, the Inspectorate can advise educational institutions on improving the quality of education or on developing policy.
The aim of the Inspectorate is to promote and guarantee the quality of education, so that all pupils and students in the Netherlands have the best possible educational opportunities.
