Overview

Established in 1995, the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) is a statutory body in India established under the National Council for Teacher Education Act, 1993. The council is responsible for the development and regulation of teacher education programmes in the country. Its functions include granting recognition to teacher education institutions, providing guidelines for the establishment of new teacher education institutions, promoting innovation and research in teacher education and maintaining a database of teacher education institutions and programmes. The NCTE also sets standards for teacher education programmes and monitors the quality of teacher education institutions through its accreditation process.
