United Kingdom Research and Innovation (UKRI) is a non-departmental public body that was established in 2017. It is the largest public funding body for research and innovation in the UK and is responsible for investing in and coordinating research and innovation activities across the country.
UKRI brings together seven research councils, Innovate UK and Research England to provide a single, strategic approach to funding research and innovation. The research councils cover a range of disciplines, including arts and humanities, economic and social sciences, engineering and physical sciences and medical research.
The main objective of UKRI is to support research and innovation that addresses the grand challenges facing society, such as climate change, ageing populations and the digital revolution. The organization provides funding for research projects, supports knowledge exchange and commercialization of research and works to build partnerships between researchers, industry and other stakeholders.
UKRI also works to support the development of a skilled workforce in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields. The organization provides funding for doctoral training programs, supports the development of research talent and promotes diversity and inclusion in STEM fields.
